September 4th isn’t just another date on the calendar for the people of Jacksonville—it’s a day of civic pride, a community-wide celebration known as 904 Day. Inspired by similar area-code-based events in other Florida cities, 904 Day is a grassroots movement to honor everything that makes Northeast Florida unique. For the Jacksonville Black Chamber of Commerce (JBCC), this day holds a special significance, representing a powerful opportunity to highlight the vital role of local, Black-owned businesses in the city’s economic and cultural landscape.

The mission of the Jacksonville Black Chamber of Commerce is clear: to foster economic empowerment and create opportunities for Black-owned businesses in the region. They are committed to building an inclusive and thriving business ecosystem through innovation, collaboration, and community engagement. This mission is directly aligned with the spirit of 904 Day. When residents are encouraged to “buy local,” the JBCC sees a chance to shine a spotlight on the entrepreneurs, creators, and service providers who are the backbone of their community.

Supporting local businesses is about more than just a single transaction; it’s an investment in the future of our city. Studies show that a significantly larger share of revenue from local businesses is reinvested back into the local economy compared to large chain stores. This creates a powerful ripple effect, leading to job creation, higher wages, and a stronger tax base that funds essential community services. For the JBCC, this is especially critical, as supporting Black-owned businesses helps close the racial wealth gap and builds generational wealth within the Black community.

On 904 Day, the JBCC and its members encourage residents to explore a new-to-you neighborhood, visit a restaurant they’ve never tried, or discover a local artist’s work. This is an opportunity to not only enjoy the rich diversity of Jacksonville’s offerings but also to actively participate in building a more equitable and prosperous community. From the historic streets of Durkeeville to the bustling shops downtown, the businesses championed by the JBCC contribute to the one-of-a-kind character of the 904.

The Jacksonville Black Chamber of Commerce uses this day to amplify the voices and businesses of its members, reminding all of Jacksonville that a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive economy is a stronger one. So on September 4th, as you celebrate the Bold City, remember to support local, and by doing so, you’ll be celebrating the businesses that make our community the unique and wonderful place we call home.
